Private meeting notes

Meeting notes that never leave your Mac

Smalt is a Mac app that transcribes your calls on the Mac's Neural Engine. No bot joins the meeting, the audio is never saved or uploaded, and the notes are Markdown files that live only on your Mac.

What happens to a call

  1. You press ⌃⌥M. Smalt listens to your microphone and your Mac's audio. Nothing joins the call.
  2. Speech is turned into text in memory by Parakeet v3, running on your Mac. The audio is thrown away as it goes.
  3. Each line is written to a file as it arrives, so a crash or restart loses nothing.
  4. When you stop, Apple Intelligence (macOS 26) writes the summary, decisions and action items on your Mac.
  5. The note is a Markdown file in ~/Documents/Smalt. That's the only copy.

25 European languages

Parakeet v3 recognizes 25 European languages, English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish and Ukrainian among them, and picks the language as you speak.

Be open with the others

Home → Copy Consent Message copies a short note for the call's chat: notes are taken locally on your Mac, nothing is uploaded, and people can ask you not to.

Questions

Is any audio uploaded?

No. Audio is transcribed in memory on your Mac and thrown away. It is never written to disk and never uploaded.

Does it work offline?

Yes. After the speech model downloads on first launch (about 480 MB), dictation and meeting notes work without a connection.

Which languages are supported?

25 European languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish and Ukrainian.

Who writes the summary?

Apple Intelligence on your Mac, on macOS 26. On older macOS you can choose a cloud provider with your own API key; only then is the transcript sent, to that provider.
