For consultants

Client calls, written down, with the answer already on screen

Smalt is a Mac app that takes your call notes without a bot joining, saves them as files you own, and shows answers from your project folders when the client asks something you'd normally have to look up.

Free · Apple Silicon · macOS 14.4 or later

No bot in the client's meeting

Press ⌃⌥M when the call starts. Smalt listens to your microphone and your Mac's audio, so it works with whatever the client uses: Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, FaceTime, Slack. Nobody gets a "notetaker wants to join" request. To be open about it, Home has a ready consent message to paste in the chat.

Notes as files, per client

When you stop, the note opens: a summary, key points, decisions, action items and the full transcript with times. It's a Markdown file in ~/Documents/Smalt, so it goes wherever your client folders go. With Apple Intelligence on macOS 26 the summary is written on your Mac too.

"What did we agree on pricing last time?"

Turn on live answers and choose the folders to search: the client's proposal, your past call notes, your own docs. When a question comes up that those files answer, a card shows the answer in the corner of your screen a few seconds later, stamped with the line it answers. You keep talking; you don't open a single folder.

Live answers are off by default. They use your own Anthropic or OpenAI key, or Claude Code if you already use it. See Live answers.

Dictation for the rest of the day

Hold ⌥, say the follow-up email, let go: it's typed into Mail, Slack, Notion or your CRM. Your clipboard is put back after every paste.

Questions

Will my client see a bot join the call?

No. Smalt records your microphone and your Mac's system audio. Nothing joins the call, and it works with Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, FaceTime and Slack.

Where are the notes kept?

As Markdown files in Documents → Smalt on your Mac. There is no Smalt server and no account.

How do I tell the client I'm taking notes?

Home → Copy Consent Message copies a short note you can paste in the call's chat, saying notes are taken locally and nothing is uploaded.

Can it tell who said what?

It marks each line as Me or Others. It doesn't separate the other speakers by name.
