Get started
Smalt is the voice assistant for developers working with AI agents. You talk to Claude Code, it works, and you hear the answer. It also types what you say into any app and takes notes of your calls. It takes about five minutes to set up. Tick each step as you go.
- Install Smalt and connect Claude Code. In a terminal (a Mac with Apple Silicon and macOS 14.4 or later):Terminal
curl -fsSL https://getsmalt.com/install.sh | bash - Open Smalt. Settings shows Finish setting up: allow the microphone, and turn Smalt on under Accessibility. That's what lets it hear you, paste your words and hear the dictation key.
- Wait for the speech model. It downloads once (about 630 MB), then speech is recognized offline.
- In your project, in Claude Code, run
/smaltand say what you want: "Claude, fix the failing auth test." Each step Claude takes ticks on the pill, and you hear the answer. Say "that's all" when you're done. More in Talk with Claude Code. - Click into any text field, hold the left ⌥ key, say something, and let go. That's dictation.
- When a call starts, press ⌃⌥M. Allow the call's audio the first time. Press ⌃⌥M again to stop, and your notes open.
Downloaded Smalt from getsmalt.com instead? Drag it to Applications, open it, then Settings → Voice Assistant → Connect Claude Code… does what the installer does.

Where everything is
Settings… in the menu bar menu, ⌘,, or the Dock icon opens Settings. Its tabs across the top: General (your key, what needs fixing, the app itself), Dictation, Meetings (with translation), Assistant, Shortcuts and Models.
Everything Smalt shows on screen is one pill at the bottom: the conversation with Claude Code, dictation, meeting notes and answers. Drag it anywhere; it stays there.
Smalt is free.
