Set up Claude
Smalt connects to Claude Code (or Claude Desktop) on your Mac over a local connection. You talk with Claude Code through it, and during meetings Claude reads the live transcript, decides what to answer and puts the answer under the question.
1. Turn it on
Settings → Meetings → Live answers → Answered by: Claude Code. To also talk with it, turn on Settings → Voice Assistant with Who answers you: Claude Code.

2. Connect Claude Code
Click Connect Claude Code…. It adds Smalt to Claude Code, installs the /smalt and /smalt-live-assistant skills, and the hook that shows Claude's steps on the pill. Your ~/.claude/settings.json is backed up first.
Or, in a terminal, the installer does the same (and installs or updates Smalt, and connects Claude Desktop if you have it):
curl -fsSL https://getsmalt.com/install.sh | bashSettings → Voice Assistant shows 1 app connected while a Claude session is using Smalt. In Claude Code, /mcp lists smalt.
3. Talk with it
In your project, in Claude Code:
/smaltThen talk. What shows on the pill, and how to cut in: Talk with Claude Code.
4. Answers in meetings
Keep Live answers on Claude Code: it reads the live transcript. During a meeting, in Claude Code:
/smalt-live-assistant ~/NotesThe skill spots questions with TypeSafe Jev, so give it your key (how to get one):
export TYPESAFE_API_KEY=your-keyClaude Desktop
The installer adds Smalt to Claude Desktop. To do it by hand: Settings → Developer → Edit Config, and add:
{
"mcpServers": {
"smalt": {
"command": "/Applications/Smalt.app/Contents/MacOS/Smalt",
"args": ["--mcp"]
}
}
}Quit Claude Desktop (⌘Q) and open it again. In a chat:
Watch my Smalt meeting and answer questions from my notes.Claude Desktop has no hooks, so its steps don't show on the pill.
Ask without a session
With Claude Code thinking and no /smalt session on, the ask key (⌥⇧) goes to Smalt's own assistant if the cloud model has a key (Set up Smalt). Otherwise the pill says "Run /smalt in Claude Code, or add a cloud key in Cloud".
